Back in the late-70s and early-80s, my brother and I spent a lot of time at that airport. Our parents had divorced, my mom lived in Chicago, my dad lived in Virginia, and we flew to visit one parent or the other. So we got to know that airport very well.

This round structure between the terminals had a bar called the Seven Continents Lounge. It offered a great view of the airport, and we would sit and drink cokes while my mom sipped a Manhattan. One Christmas, the airport got closed for three days by a huge blizzard. We spent the night in the airport, then drove back to my mom’s place the next day. Our Christmas vacation was extended. About twenty years ago, my wife and I vacationed to Chicago and we spent some time hanging out at the airport for old time’s sake. The lounge was still there, so we went up and had a drink.

O’Hare is were I got bitten by the airplane bug. It was such a busy, exciting, noisy, thrilling place. I loved going there.

I love that Golden Jet, entirely appropriate since Chicago was the home of Bobby Hull for so many years.

I had just opened this link from Airways News, and was going to share these. You beat me to it!

Hey! A United Caravelle! I’m writing about the Caravelle for next Friday’s Aviation History post. United bought 20 of them, the only US domestic carrier to fly it. One of my favorite planes.

This terminal was still there, but in the years I was hanging out there they built a huge Hilton Hotel on the parking lot to the left, along with the iconic ORD tower.

One of these days my wife and I are going to take a little weekend trip to Chicago. Stopping by ORD for some spotting is on the list of things to do. My wife was even excited by the idea!

Let me know if the Seven Continents is still there. My family is actually thinking about a drive up to CHI this summer, and ORD will be on the sightseeing list. I’ll bet that you can’t get to the Seven Continents, if it’s still there, without a ticket.

That’s a DC-8 to the right of the Caravelle. Neat.
